There has been a great deal of research in recent times, by scientists who study the working of the brain, that helps us understand better how to help children become confident readers. Some of this research confirms what experienced teachers have said for a long time, based on their practical experience, both personal and professional, some of it offers new ideas and approaches. The lecture will discuss how this old and new knowledge can be put into effective practice by teachers and librarians.

Aidan Chambers is a writer of novels and stories, plays, and books on literature and the teaching of literature. He also owns a small publishing house with his wife, Thimble Press, which publishes books on children’s literature and reading. He lectures frequently at universities, and gives talks in schools and to other groups of interested people. More about him on his website: www.aidanchambers.co.uk.
